“Mom, don’t worry. I got it handled. Don’t crap on my parade here. Meg is going to be on my arm.” I sink into a chair at our breakfast table. “Let me enjoy this moment, would you?”
She sits down next to me. “Oh, honey. Why is this so important to you?”
It takes me a few seconds to gather my thoughts. I want to tell her, but I don’t want her to laugh at me. “You know how Dad always says he knew you were the one from the moment he met you?”
She smiles. “Of course.”
“Mom, Megan is the one for me. I just know it. Like Dad knew it about you.” Her eyes fill with tears at my confession. “Things may be working against us right now, but I know she’s worth the wait.” I pause, trying to swallow my own emotions. “I know I’m being selfish, but if she’s not there with me, years from now I’ll look back on this experience and hate myself for not making her a part of it.” A frog sits right in the back of my throat. Telling my mom about Meg has me all sorts of choked up. “When we’re old and gray and reminiscing about this moment in high school, I don’t want to have any regrets. I want the memory to include Meg. I’m going to smile like a fool because she was right there with me. Without her, it just wouldn’t be complete. Is that so hard to understand?”
